Verizon has lowered prices for two of their most popular phones, LG’s enV3 and enV Touch. This is not an uncommon occurrence when new gadgets are released. As time passes, popularity wanes, or new technology comes about that makes previous technology obsolete, prices for older gadgets go down. What’s odd is that this price reduction is coming less than a month after the May 28 release of both phones.
The enV3 features a full QWERTY keypad, a 2.6-inch external display as well as a 1.56-inch internal display, and supports microSD cards up to 16GB. The enV Touch has a 3-inch touchscreen exterior display, a 3-inch non-touch interior display, a full QWERTY keypad, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus, and the ability to view Microsoft Office documents with a microSD card. Both phones come equipped with GPS, mobile e-mail, Web and IM, as well as threaded SMS and MMS.
The phones originally cost $129 and $149, respectively. Verizon announced last week that it was reducing the prices of both phones by $50, putting their current prices at $79.99 and $99.99. If you bought either of these phones at the original prices, you may be able to get a refund for the difference, or at least a store or account credit for that amount. Many businesses will honor a price reduction within 30 days of purchase. Don’t be surprised, though, if Verizon initially balks at this when you ask. Stick to your guns. There’s no guarantee they’ll do it, but it’s worth a shot.
The company did not give a reason for the reduction, or why it came so soon after the initial release. I would speculate, though, that it has a lot to do with Apple and AT&T recently reducing the cost of the 8GB iPhone to just $99.
If that’s the case, I wonder how long it will be before Sprint reduces the cost of its newest star, the Palm Pre, which currently costs $199.99 after instant savings and mail-in rebates.
