Our long wait might be coming to an end. T-Mobile, long rumored to be rolling out a 3G network, has said they hope to have it fully operational by summer. Of course, this was an inevitability. T-Mo won an auction back in 2006 that allowed them to launch a third generation offering. They had planned to do it in September of last year, even offering an initial phone that works on it. However, the previous occupants were and still are taking their time getting off the airwaves, thus delaying T-Mobile’s plans. But things seem to be in order now, so you can use that selection of 3G phones — there are three now, I believe — to their full capability in the near future.
This is coming from T-Mo CEO Hamid Akhavan, who has to feel a good deal of weight coming off his shoulders. According to this article on SearchMobileComputing.com”
The long delay has been hard on this telecom, as it’s the only major wireless carrier in the United States without a 3G network. And one of its competitors, Sprint, is going to start offering a 4G network to customers in the near future.
By Sprint’s 4G network, he’s referring to the WiMax initiative that was almost quashed after former CEO Gary Forsee was ousted. WiMax has more Internet implications than voice, though maybe Sprint is ready to route all its calls over the Internet.
In any case, enjoy your 3G, T-Mo subscribers.
