WiMax has taken quite a hit recently. Once the symbol of a bright Internet future, development of the project slowed down when Sprint pulled out of its partnership with Clearwire. Yes, Clearwire will continue to develop it, probably with funding from other outside sources. Sprint will also continue their development, because, well, they need to get something out there that their rivals, Verizon and AT&T, don’t have. Chinese handset maker ZTE Corp. now says it’s talking with Sprint about collaborating on WiMax handsets.
I’m going to quote this paragraph, and then expand:
Sprint has said it would offer services based on WiMax in the coming months. The company has been criticized for its plans to spend $5 billion by 2010 on a network based on a relatively new technology.
Who is criticizing Sprint for this? Probably the people who want them buried. What, do people honestly think that they’re going to compete by sticking to the status quo? The same status quo that has them hemorrhaging subscribers? I mention that so damn much that I didn’t even have to link back to it.
If Sprint is going to regain consumer confidence, they have to bring something new to the table. This includes things new for them — like quality customer service — and new to the industry — like WiMax…though quality customer service would be pretty new to the telecommunications industry.
We’ll get some more coverage on these handsets once a deal is struck. It’s tough not to get excited about WiMax. We’re talking high-speed, far-reaching Internet, right from your phone.
