T-Mobile’s Project Dark could be just the boost the Android platform needs. The company has two handsets coming, one from Motorola and the other from Samsung, and they both look like the real deal. While Project Dark remains one of the hottest rumors in the cellular space, there’s another Android device making waves. Anyone who has watched the MLB playoffs should be familiar with the phrase, Droid Does. That’s an advertisement for the first Verizon Android device, the Motorola Droid. While T-Mobile has a potentially game-changing plan ready to go, the real highlight of the new Android devices is the Droid.
Boy Genius Report has an initial look at the Droid. It might not be an iPhone killer, but then again no device is. No manufacturer is going to replace the iPhone. It’s just impossible. The Droid, however, is an iPhone competitor. The hardware is top-notch, and the software is under constant development. Unlike the BlackBerry Storm, it will make Verizon customers really ponder a switch to AT&T. Verizon has better coverage, after all, despite the inaccuracies in its “there’s a map for that” ad campaign.
How does the Droid stack up against the iPhone? It has a larger screen, and it runs faster, according to BGR. That’s always a plus. It also features a slide-out keyboard, an enormous advantage. It doesn’t create much more bulk in doing so, and the BGR guys say it is “just slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS.” The trade-off for most consumers is worthwhile. The Droid really does look like the iPhone alternative on Verizon, though the BlackBerry Storm 2 could capture a few business users.
This isn’t to downplay the Motorola Cliq or the Samsung Behold II. Both will run on the same platform as the Droid, and both should bring T-Mobile many customers once they completely unveil Project Dark. But for customers looking for the more reliable brand name, Verizon is about to deliver. The Droid is going to turn some heads.
