Boost Mobile will offer Samsung Seek

by Cooper Lang on August 13, 2010

First, people began abandoning their landlines in favor of mobile phones. Landlines are expensive, and they don’t offer additional capabilities such as e-mail, Web surfing, or applications that increase productivity. Cell phones were, and still are, a more economical option that offer a lot more functionality. Then the economy starting going downhill, and a lot of people couldn’t afford their mobile phone plans anymore, so they turned to prepaid wireless plans. While there’s a lot of news floating around right now about sales of smartphones increasing, contract plans are still lagging behind prepaid sales. In the first quarter of 2010, the prepaid market grew 17 percent while the contract market only increased by three percent. It seems carriers are taking note of the shift, and are starting to cater a bit more to prepaid wireless customers. Boost Mobile has upped the ante by announcing it will offer customers the Samsung Seek.

Sprint, the parent company of Boost Mobile, already carries the Samsung Seek. The phone has a 2.6-inch QVGA touch screen, stereo Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. It offers e-mail and instant messaging, social networking capabilities, Web access, and multimedia messaging services (MMS), and many other extras. This will be the first phone offered by Boost that has a combination touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The Samsung Seek will be available on Boost Mobile on August 25, and will cost $149. At first, it will only be available online and from a handful of select stores. Expect to see it in Sprint retail locations in September.

Boost Mobile will also be offering a $50 per month unlimited plan, available with no annual contract. The plan will include nationwide voice and texting, e-mail, Web, and 411 calls.

If you’ve been thinking about switching to a prepaid plan rather than a long-term contract, now may be a good time to do it.
