Alltel releases three new handsets

by Joe P on January 25, 2008

Seems to be a lot of phones being debuted recently. Not sure why that is, but it certainly is neat to see new gadgets hitting the market. Today is Alltel’s day, with three new handsets being added to its lineup. Well, two new ones and a revamp. Alltel has had the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, but now they get it in red — Verizon is getting a pink one, and Sprint’s will also be red. The other additions are the LG Scoop and the Samsung Muse.

The Pearl has always been a neat phone. It features a half-QWERTY keyboard, so its more like a candybar than a full smartphone. It has almost all of the features of a full-sized BlackBerry, though, including a microSD slot, GPS, BlueTooth, media player, and browser. But because it is more a consumer model than a business one, it has a 2 megapixel camera, something you don’t often see on BlackBerrys.

The Scoop is another candybar, but it slides out lengthwise to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. It’s got Bluetooth, yes, but not much else. The camera is a paltry 1.3 megapixels. Mmm….grainy photos. As Mobile Burn points out, this is basically the same thing as the LG Rumor that you see on Sprint and MetroPCS.

Finally, the Muse — not to be confused with the rock band — is a sleek-looking clamshell with music capabilities. Its camera is 2 megapixels, and even features video recording capability. Yeah, it’s got Bluetooth and all that. It’s your basic cell phone, just with a built-in media player.

No pricing has been set for these handsets, but they’re all due to drop before the end of March.
