For a while, YouTube had an exclusive partnership with Verizon Wireless which allowed their subscribers to view a limited library. Then came the iPhone, which opened up YouTube’s catalogue to the masses. That might have started a craze: The Google subsidiary is aiming to get their services on a ton of handsets in the near future, with the hope of soon reaching 100 million mobile consumers.
“It’s basically the full YouTube experience you can get on the desktop — on the phone,” said Dwipal Desia, YouTube’s mobile product manager. “We expect it to get fairly popular from our past experiences.”
So what we’re seeing is the mobile Internet becoming more and more like our desktop Internet. This is what people want, and YouTube is helping deliver it. I absolutely love that the full catalogue is going to be available, unlike with the Verizon service.
Another point of improvement they’re working on: Making it easier to upload from your phone. With more and more phones having video capabilities, it makes sense to allow for easy uploading. This might take some work with carriers, though, since the software that runs the in-phone camera is typically created by the carrier.
You’ll start seeing the service on phones from Motorola, LG, Nokia, and Sony Erisson sometime this year.
