In case you missed it, back in July, Major League Baseball (MLB) introduced a live streaming application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The MLB’s At Bat application costs $9.99, (there’s a free lite version as well) and allows MLB.tv subscribers to watch any game they choose live, either on their computer, or on their iPhone or iPod Touch via any Wi-Fi or 3G network connection. Before you get any ideas, the app blocks any games that are blacked out in the user’s local viewing area. MLB introduced a beta version of an app for Android phones last Wednesday, just in time for the World Series. It was only a matter of time before other sports enterprises followed suit, and the next one to enter the wireless arena is the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Last Friday, NBA League Pass Mobile became available for download onto the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android phones. A BlackBerry app is set to be launched later this year. Unlike the MLB app, League Pass Mobile doesn’t require an existing subscription to League Pass TV, but the app does cost quite a bit more than At Bat. For $39.99, users will have the ability to watch up to 40 live games per week on their smartphone. Like the MLB app, blacked out games are blocked from streaming via the app, but the NBA app offers the option to watch some games on demand. The app also provides game alerts and live stats. The NBA is considering bundling League Pass TV and the streaming app, which may bring the price down in the future.
In addition to League Pass Mobile, the NBA has other apps available in three of the major wireless carrier app stores. Game Time and Game Time Lite can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google’s Android Market, and BlackBerry App World. Game Time costs $9.99, and offers some on-demand video, live game alerts, game highlights, stats, and updates from an NBA Twitter stream. The Lite version is free, and offers team schedules, standings, scores, and stats.
There is also an application in Apple’s App Store to stream live National Football League (NFL) games. It is provided by DirecTV, and requires a subscription to that service, as well as DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket package.
