Mobile Notes: iPhone (duh), Windows Mobile, Pregnancy, In-Flight Calls

by Joe P on May 19, 2008

So not only do we get to talk about the iPhone today, but we also touch on one of my favorite subjects, in-flight calls. I sat next to two guys on a plane last week who were presumably from the same company. The one guy had a spreadsheet open and just talked to his associate for the duration of the flight. It actually wasn’t that bad. Then again, people have a tendency to TALK REALLY LOUD ON THEIR CELL PHONES, so that might be my issue right there.

  • iPhone users have hit Apple with a $1.2 billion class action suit. This is over the company locking the device to the AT&T network, then releasing firmware updates with the intention of bricking unlocked phones. The article makes it seem like a longshot.
  • Pregnan? Don’t use your cell phone. A recent study, says that using a cell even two or three times a day can lead to behavioral problems in a newborn, including hyperactivity. I haven’t read it yet — it’s to be published in July — but I have to wonder if there’s really causation there.
  • It sounds like using your cell phone in flight will cost you $500. That was the fine — from a disorderly conduct ticket — slapped to a man who yakked away for 20 minutes (though supposedly about his sick father, so it’s tough to disparage him). The same guy who talked for the duration of my flight was actually making a call as we were taking off, for whatever that’s worth.
  • Microsoft expects that Windows Mobile will cover 40 percent of the global smartphone market by 2012. In other news, I expect that Scarlet Johansson will break off her current engagement and pledge her undying love to me.
