Nexus One on T-Mobile looks like a reality

A couple of weeks ago, the possibility that Google would be teaming up with T-Mobile to release its Nexus One—also known in the rumor mill as the Google Phone—seemed like nothing more than a rumor, and an unlikely one at that. T-Mobile is the number four wireless carrier in the United States? Why would the tech giant choose the fourth best carrier for its big foray into the cellular phone arena? The exact reasons may not become apparent for a while, or at least until one or both companies make an announcement confirming the hype. But if leaked documents are to be believed, it’s more apparent than ever that Google has done just that.

Two sites have shared leaked documents that provide the release method, and the anticipated cost of Google’s Nexus One phone, and seem to confirm its availability through T-Mobile. Well, at least the service can be secured through T-Mobile. According to one leaked document, the phone will initially be available only from Google.

TmoNews posted an internal document from T-Mobile that says Google will sell the Nexus One via the Web, while T-Mobile will provide “service support including billing, coverage, features and rate plans.” They cite other internal sources as having confirmed a release date of January 5, 2010.

Another site, Gizmodo, posted a screenshot of what looks like the site Google will use to sell the Nexus One on January 5, if all this information is accurate. It shows the unlocked price as $529.99, and the price with a standard two-year contract from T-Mobile as $179.99, which is pretty much what we said Nexus One prices would be a couple of weeks ago. The cost of the wireless plan is listed as $79.99, which includes 500 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, and unlimited domestic messaging. The screenshot also shows prices for desktop and car docking stations at $39.99 and $49.99, respectively.

So while we don’t yet know why Google seems to have chosen T-Mobile as its carrier, what does seem obvious is that being the only carrier authorized to sell and provide service for the Nexus One could be just the boost T-Mobile needs to boost its position, as well as its revenue. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

RATE PLAN IS HORRIBLE! Only one choice 500 minutes. Unlimited minutes isn’t even an option. T-mobile had to find a way to maintain their lesser position in the market.
