New network coverage: AT&T, Alltel, Verizon

by Joe P on August 6, 2008

We’re back with another update on new cellular coverage across the country.

  • Alltel rolled out Rev. A broadband upgrades in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska. It will run along Interstate 80. I’m wondering, though, how Alltel is performing these operations, what with the Verizon merger looming.
  • AT&T has expanded service in the Washington DC area. And by that, I mean that they’ll cover the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Centre, all 470,000 square feet of it.
  • Verizon continues their expansion into Florida, boosting coverage in Nassau County. It will cover River Road (County Road 108) and surrounding areas.
  • Also in the Southeast, Verizon has expanded and enhanced coverage in Georgia, for both the voice and data network.
  • Some new Verizon coverage in Ohio, as the nation’s soon-to-be No. 1 carrier picks up zones in Pike and Ross counties. This includes Route 35 from Fairview to Chillicothe, Route 50 from Bainbridge to Schrader, and Route 23 from the Ross/Pickaway County border to the Scioto County border.

The reason why Alltel is still making their network better is because the Alltel/Verizon merger is not complete. Alltel still has an obligation to it’s customers. The plans for REV. A have been in the works for years, these build out plans are at a minimum of 2 years out ant any given time. They are just fullfilling their build out plan. Alltel has to continue with their build because there is a possiblity of it not happening. Mereger has get approved by the Dept. of Justice, FCC, and the SEC. If any one of those Federal entities say NO then it is not getting done.
