Comcast about to enter wireless industry?

What does it mean when a company says that they plan to “explore wireless options”?. It would probably mean just that under normal circumstances. However, given that Comcast has ditched Pivot, their wireless service offering via Sprint, and that they have hired Dave Williams, former CTO of Telefonica O2 Europe, it seems that they’re pretty serious.

A wireless division would give Comcast the valuable quad-play: TV, voice, Internet, and wireless. Verizon and AT&T both have all four services, but only offer them bundled in certain regions. As GigaOm notes: “A recent survey from Compete and Fierce Wireless concluded that consumers are ready to purchase wireless service as part of a bundle and are willing to purchase it from a wireline carrier or a cable provider.”

The speculation doesn’t stop there, though. See, Comcast doesn’t have a full network of their own. But they did win plenty of licenses in the AWS spectrum auction. They funded SpectrumCo, along with Time Warner and Cox. There is further speculation that Comcast could seek to buy Sprint or T-Mobile. That seems a bit far-fetched, but we’ve seen stranger things.

Another wireless competitor on the national level is welcome, even if it is Comcast, who has been accused of some shady dealings.
