AT&T doubles 3G network capacity

by Michelle L on April 23, 2009

AT&T is working on doubling the downlink capacity of its 3G network, increasing High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) speeds from 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps. The network improvements are already being tested in two key markets before they’re rolled out nationwide.

Rather than further doubling capacity to 14.4Mbps at a later date, the company is already looking ahead to HSPA+, which has the capacity to operate at 21Mbps. Along with increasing speeds, AT&T is in the process of expanding its 3G network into the 850Mhz spectrum, giving the network a much wider range, and the ability to reach into buildings.

Why the rush? A couple of reasons. First, AT&T’s deal with Apple to be the exclusive iPhone carrier expires next year. AT&T is requesting that contract be extended through 2011, but there are no guarantees Apple will give in.

The second reason is definitely more interesting. The iPhone currently offers 480i video resolution. Rumor has it the next iteration of the iPhone will offer a full HD output mode of 720p. iPhone users would be able to download HD video directly to the device, and either watch the video on the iPhone, or connect the iPhone to a high definition TV for better viewing. If further rumors are true, the new iPhone, possibly called the iPhone HD will come out sometime later this year.

In addition, Apple is replacing its Apple Composite AV Cable and Apple Component AV Cable with a consolidated cable, simply called the Apple AV Cable, which supports both component and composite output, and costs about the same as one of the current cables.

Better resolution and easier TV connection means more HD video downloads, which requires more speed. Hence, AT&T’s network enhancements, and the quick jump to 21Mbps. We’ll keep you posted.
