Skype for iPhone now available in Canada

Skype, one of the most popular voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications, has been available for the iPhone since March 29 of this year. It’s generated some buzz because its main functions can allow users to bypass their wireless providers’ basic calling and texting functions, thereby avoiding paying for them, depending on how they have their calling plan set up. Yet, Apple still allows the app in its store. And now it’s available in Canada.

The app became available to Canadian iPhone users last Wednesday. The desktop application allows PC-to-PC calls, as well as PC-to-landline calls. The iPhone app works in much the same way, allowing free calls via Wi-Fi connections. Both the caller and the call recipient must be Skype users for it to work. Calls must be placed over a Wi-Fi connection because Apple does not allow Skype calls to be made over their 3G network.

But the app can use the 3G and EDGE networks for other tasks like signing into the app and using it to send instant messages. It can also be used to call landlines or mobile phones, and the rates are competitive with current wireless plans.

Skype for iPhone app boasts features like call forwarding, voicemail, and texting, and is available in 16 languages besides English.
